The ASL is part of the Materials Science in Extreme Environments University Research Alliance (MSEE URA) an alliance of 18 research institutions and supported by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA). As part of this effort, ASL is studying chemistry in extreme environments/high temperature properties and chemistry of chemical warfare agent simulants.

At ASL, we have characterized several simulants under fast heating conditions—up to 18,000 °C/s for temperatures up to 1,200 °C. Using a Pyroprobe heater in combination with kinetic FTIR we were able to identify a new reaction pathway that occurs for the most extreme conditions.
